Water Works Pavilion, Hobart, Tasmania
This collaborative project by the students at the University of Tasmania Architecture School with the Hobart City Council was one of a series of small buildings designed and constructed by students with the architect as mentor, guide and building instructor. It sits in a highly sensitive lakeside site on the shore of the city's drinking water reserve and as such it was critical that a low impact and zero toxic output building eventuated. Almost all the building was fabricated in remote workshops and the local stone pier for the BBQ was built from site sourced rock. The pavilion was designed for large groups to enjoy social events in this beautiful bush location within minutes of the city centre. The walls are made from moveable aerofoil louvres which can be opened to allow sun and light or closed against the mountain winds as required.
The roof structure element is a prefabricated expandable lattice which arrived on site as a single piece and folded out to form a six metre square element.
