The Teahouse
The TeaHouse received a Special Commendation at the 2002 Timber Development AssociationAustralian Timber Design Awards
A simple and gentle intrusion into native bush on the side of a mountain in Southern Tasmania
allowing occupation of a difficult and delicate site..
This building is an expression of a much contemplated philosophy
regarding the nature of minimalism and building
This delicate but robust timber building was prefabricated in a workshop using modified
traditional Japanese Joinery techniques hybridised with the essence of the great Australian
vernacular building, the Tin Shed. It rests on four massive native stone
boulders set into the ground with the posts shaped to fit the stone and locked
to them with stainless pins. Three walls are made up of sliding amato storm
doors which slide away to reveal lightweight shoji style canvas doors which also
all slide away to completely open up to the surrounding bushland. The building was entirely prefabricated in a workshop in the next valley
and carried to the inaccessible site by hand and put up by a motley crew over a
long weekend. .
