Mal's Place

A joined timber framed building, no nails, screws or other such travesty, with a full length, local stone, internal spine wall on a remote site in Southern Tasmania. The building uses locally sourced and milled Celery Top Pine for the fully exposed Post and Beam frame. The entire north face of the building is clad with sliding timber framed glass doors and windows to make the most of the sun and extensive use of stone and zincalume to the cold southern side which is also prone to bushfires.

The building sits on a a large stone terrace erected from local field stones. The timber floor panels are raised 450mm above the terrace allowing for extensive underfloor storage and sunken seating in the eating and sitting areas. The bath is also at floor level in a field of stones from the local creek and around the world.
