Balmain Terrace House
This small terrace house was Highly Commended in Renovation category at the 2003 Timber Development Association
Australian Timber Design Awards
This was a major renovation of an inner city semi in Birchgrove, Sydney, NSW. The design lifts the amenity available from a limited tiny terrace to an peaceful, luxurious inner world, glimpsing out to the bustling city beyond. The small central courtyard acts as a lightwell for the lower floor as does the central stair void with roof glazing over. The rear pavillion has an earth sheltered roof, with a herb and screening garden on top.
Recycled and re-used materials were the the formulators of the pallette for this design and construction program. All the timber was gathered from surrounding buildings and suburb. Most of it was hand milled on site for use in the works. All of the bricks and floorboards and many of the bits and pieces of glass, windows, and roofing were re-used from the site, other buildings and project remainders.
All the finishes are non-toxic, minimal ecological impact, BioPaints, natural oils and polishes are used throughout. We believe this was the first time curved structural aluminium I Beams were used in a building project.
