Canberra Bushfire Re-Build
A suburban dwelling rebuilt after bushfire destroyed the family house.
The new home is designed as a series of pavilions in a garden with a central fire-proof
masonry core with master suite above. The plan centres around the earth sheltered masonry core with rammed earth walls and
slab floor and ceiling, this is the central refuge and retreat from fire, the weather,
both cold and hot and the outside world. It opens onto a formal northern
entry garden and a central kitchen garden courtyard.
The seven pavilions are gathered around the core and are joined by a loggia courtyard. They are
light weight structures resting on heavy masonry bases with plastered and rendered AAC block walls and an Aluminium Alloy I Beam
roof structure with glazed highlights and large north facing glazed timber doors.
Each pavilion opens onto its own private courtyard terrace or garden space.
